“Prevention is better than cure.” Well said and well understood! But there are certain types of headaches, which are part and parcel of you; gifted to you by birth! Sinus headache is one of them, unfortunately.

Many say about sinus, “that which can not be cured, must be endured!' You can control it, reduce its impact. Can it be ever eradicated? The answer is in the negative, as far as the present day medical research can take you!

In sinus, invariably you have the headache, but every headache is not sinus! Sinus and nasal passage problems are the cause of headache, mostly! It is not that you have pain in the sinus area and you need to conclude that you have a sinus disorder. When the nasal passage and sinus are inflamed, it can result in a severe headache. In acute chronic sinus, the intensity of headache varies with the severity of the sinus. Sinus patients complain about many other problems. The sinus patient is more likely to experience:

1. Chills and fevers
2. Swelling of face
3. Nasal stiffness
4. Tension in the upper teeth, which will give lots of pain
5. Or, yellow or green discharge.

If you are suffering from sinus, you must live a controlled life, and must remain highly disciplined, with regard to the diet. There are strict laws as far as do’s and don’ts are concerned! Singers will have to take special care about maintaining the vocal chords of their throats! Sinus remains ever ready to sabotage their plans.

Pranaayama and Yoga asanas go a long way in controlling and curing the sinus headache! Regular light exercise must be done and tough and heavy exercises need to be avoided. The use of steam vaporizer must become the part of your life, if you detect the sinus! Develop the habit of morning walk. Do not walk too briskly or too slowly, and avoid too chilly or too hot days. Breathe moist air.

Sinus and headache are two different problems. When they club together and make a joint attack on you, your only defense is to find out the root cause of their arrival and then check them. So far, it has not been possible for the medical science and research, to defeat the sinus headache. But to erect barricades in its onward march is certainly possible!

Sinus infection is generally produced by bacteria. The sinuses are cavities which along with the nose allow the air to pass through and go to the lungs. If these cavities get stuck with mucus which is failed to be taken out of the organism bacteria will end up accumulating and developing a local infection.

Sinusitis is the name for the sinus infection. The symptoms of sinusitis are varied from facial pain and local tenderness, to general fatigue, pain in the upper jaw, and swollen eyelids. Also, cough, headaches, colored nasal drainage, sore throat and photophobia are present in a lot of cases of sinusitis.

The symptoms are present depending whether the sinusitis is acute or chronic and depending on what sinuses are affected.

Frontal acute sinusitis brings fever, forehead pain, nasal discharge or postnasal drip. Also the person feels better if it has the head upright otherwise pain may appear.

In acute maxillary sinusitis the pain appears when the head is upright and the patient feels better if the head is in a reclining position. This type of sinusitis affects one or both of the cheekbones, causing pain, redness and swallowing of the cheekbone; nasal discharge is also present; pain occurs also around the eye and the upper teeth.

Acute ethmoid sinusitis causes symptoms like: pain near the base of the nose, between the eyes, one side of the nose or around the inner corner of the eyes; headaches, nasal discharge and congestion. The pain gets worse if the head is upright and when coughing.

Acute sphenoid sinusitis has the following symptoms: fever, terrible pain when lying back and bending forward, on top of the head and in the forehead area. Also nasal discharge is present. If pressure extents to the brain, visual problems might install.

If a patient has chronic sinusitis then the localized pain in the sinuses area is pretty much continuous, the headaches are also present all the time, bad breath and chronic cough. If the maxillary sinuses are affected then toothaches might be present. Also, acute pain in the morning and when wearing glasses will not avoid the patient. In chronic sphenoid sinusitis, the infection of the sinuses gives a general headache.

Sinusitis must be treated from its first symptoms as it can cause complications in time, like spreading the infection to other parts of the body, and for resolving that, surgery might be the only solution remaining at that time.

    The Facts about Sinusitis

    Sinusitis

Simply put, sinusitis is inflammation of the lining of your sinuses.

    Sinuses

The sinuses are located behind the eyes, the cheeks, and the jaw. They are chambers in which mucous is produced to clean out the bacteria that we take in every day through the mouth and nose. The mucous moves along the cilia, which are tiny, moving hairs that maneuver the mucous. Sinusitis creates difficulties for the sinuses as they try to do their job, because the cilia cease to move and the sinuses either produce too much mucous or too little.

    Possible Causes

Sinusitis can be caused in a variety of ways. The inflammation of the sinus lining is sensitive to changes in temperature or humidity, and often swimming, diving, extreme changes in temperature, and smoking will set off inflammation. The reason these things can cause sinusitis is that they create a friendly environment for bacteria and viruses.

For example, smoking paralyzes the cilia, causing the sinuses to think that there are bacteria or a virus and to produce more mucous. Since the cilia cannot move, the mucous just sits there, congests, and becomes a breeding ground for more bacteria, creating a sinus infection. Stagnant water or liquid buildup from water activities can produce similar effects. Or, if a virus has already infected the sinuses and swelling occurs, then the produced mucous will build up even more. Sinusitis is just the beginning of any nasal problem.

What many people don’t know is that sinusitis, though beginning in the sinuses can also contribute to an ear infection. The reason is that the sinuses and the ears are connected through the Eustachian tube, and something as simple as sneezing can push infection right out to the ears. Not only can infection move out to the ears but also down to the lungs. Sinusitis is not entirely unrelated to an upper respiratory infection. Often Sinusitis, ear infection, and upper respiratory infection have similar, if not the same, causes.

    Sinusitis Symptoms

As mentioned in previous articles, the culprit is often post nasal drip. Post nasal drip is often part of a cold or flu symptom. It is a sensation of mucous dripping in the back of your throat. Frequent sniffing and swallowing should be indications of proactive sinuses. In other words, sinuses are producing more mucous because they sense bacteria or a virus. Sinusitis and sinus infection do frequently occur in the wake of a cold or the flu.

    Sinusitis Prevention

Prevention is the best way to stay out of the way of sinusitis. Many of the preventions are also treatments. The regular rinsing of the sinuses is generally helpful in keeping bacteria from settling and mucous from getting over-produced. Using a nasal spray with xylitol as its leading ingredient is recommended due to the fact that xylitol is a natural element produced in fruits and vegetables that repels bacteria. As bacteria is kept from settling in the sinus lining, infection, inflammation, and sinusitis are also effectively prevented.
