The sinus headache is unique in it's location. It primarily affects the face, but can also affect the entire top of the head if the sinus infection is left untreated too long. You can actually make the sinus headache hurt worse by pushing on your sinus cavities such as your cheekbones and forehead. I wouldn't recommend doing it though as the pain spikes severely and does not go back down for hours!

The sinus headache is caused by a sinus infection or sinusitis. Since there are several sinus cavities and locations, pain from a sinus headache may be in all or just a few locations. Pain from the sinus cavities is felt in the cheek area, above and behind the eyes and top of the head. Getting on an antibiotic can give relief the next day.

I've read that sinus infections rarely cause sinus headaches, and I can't help but wonder if that author had ever experienced a sinus infection? I had chronic sinus infections for over twenty years until I had sinus surgery a few years ago and an overly large turbinate was removed. I have not had a sinus infection, or very painful sinus headache for three years now. I can tell you though that from my experience with twenty years of sinus infections, every single one of them produced a sinus headache.

The pain from a sinus headache was slightly less painful, or as painful as a migraine headache. Bending over made the sinus headache so painful that I almost passed out.

While waiting for your antibiotic to kick in and stop the pain, there are some things you can do to give relief from the sinus headache. Lie back and put a warm washcloth on your forehead, eyes and cheeks several times a day. Take aspirin, acetaminophen or ibuprofen also after making sure there will be no drug interaction with your sinus infection prescription. Use a hot steam vaporizer in your bedroom or lie down in the bathroom with the shower running on hot water. You can lie back in the tub with the shower running but I wouldn't recommend it as the pressure from the water hitting your face would cause the pain to be much worse.

It is important to drink lots of liquids to help flush out the sinuses. Use a saline nasal spray a few times a day to try and open up the sinuses to help them drain faster. You may be quite nauseous from the sinus infection but do try to eat some soup and applesauce. You don’t want to add a hunger headache on top of the sinus headache. Also sleep as much as you can. Sleep helps the body heal, and you can't feel pain when you're asleep!

Unlike a lot of other headaches that patients must suffer through, a sinus headache does have some potential cures, or at least effective remedies. This isn’t to say they’ll all be instant, cure alls, but there are some approaches sufferers can take to remove or at least lessen the pain.

A sinus headache is characterized by pain that’s induced when the sinus cavities become congested. This can be brought on by colds, allergies or sinusitis. Many of the causes will go away on their own, but some will require medical attention to tackle.

The symptoms of a sinus headache include such things as pain in the forehead and around the eyes and cheeks. Tenderness in the skin and bones under the eyes may also be present. Pain that radiates out from the eyes toward the temples is also a top symptom.

Frequent symptoms beyond the facial pain include blurred vision, pain with movement and even pain in the teeth. Many a sinus headache sufferer has made a dental appointment to tackle the pain only to find out it’s actually caused by the sinuses.

The causes of a sinus headache generally fall in line with swollen or inflamed sinus cavities. Sinuses that are filled up with mucous can also induce the condition.

The best way to treat a true sinus headache is to tackle the underlying problem. If it’s sinusitis, an antibiotic might be prescribed to combat the condition. A cold induced or allergy induced sinus headache will often respond well to treatment of those conditions. Over the counter medications and inhalers often work well, too, in lessening the pain involved in the headache itself.

Some people who suffer from chronic sinus headache symptoms actually don’t have sinus headaches at all. Many headache specialists say that sinus headaches are frequently misdiagnosed. The underlying problem in this case is actually a migraine.

To tell the difference between a sinus headache and a migraine can be quite difficult. This is especially so if there is a visible problem in the sinus system at the time of an attack. Things to watch for, however, include pain that’s stronger or more focused to one side, an extreme sensitivity to light or sound and a throbbing or pulsing pain sensation. If these things are present, the sinus headache might just be a migraine, which isn’t to say the pain is any less appealing.

Dealing with a sinus headache can be a real nightmare. For those who experience severe attacks, the condition can be quite derailing. The best treatment is a good offense. Allergy sufferers who also get these headache should keep their allergies in check when possible. Those with other sinus conditions might want to see the advice of a specialist to bring the underlying condition into check. There is help out there for those who seek it.

    What Causes a Sinus Infection

A sinus infection, also known as sinusitis, can cause a great deal of pain. It is the result of an inflammation of the sinus or nasal passages or both. When someone has a sinus infection there are several symptoms that will help him or her to recognize that that is what he or she are suffering from. Sinusitis is often accompanied by a feeling of tenderness or pressure around the nose, eyes, cheeks or forehead. Sometimes it is accompanied by headache pain. If you have a sinus infection you may also have a cough, a fever or congestion resulting in discharge from your nose. A sinus infection can come on suddenly and then leave after the correct treatment, lasting a few weeks, or it can be a chronic problem that lasts more than eight weeks at a time with at least four occurrences yearly. Surprisingly most cases of sinusitis are chronic in nature.

Most people do not know the purpose of the sinuses. They are there to protect the skull. They make it feel lighter as well as to give the voice the ability to echo inside of it. There are four pairs of sinuses that connect the nostrils to the nasal passages. If germs get into any of them it will cause a sinus infection. One way to think of a sinus infection is that it is an inflammation of the lining of the sinuses. If all of them are inflamed then it is called pansinusitis.

The most frequent cause of a sinus infection is the common cold. The cold causes congestion in the nasal passages and this inhibits the drainage of the sinuses and can cause them to become inflamed. But sinusitis can also be caused by flying or scuba diving because of the pressure changes that occur. Pregnancy is another common cause of sinus infection. This is because there are hormonal changes that can cause swelling of the nasal passages and this can result in a sinus infection. Women who use birth control pills, which copy the state of pregnancy by hormone changes, can also experience this problem. Those who are asthma suffers are also at risk for an increased number of sinus issues.

Treatment for sinus infection is usually the same as most other types of infection. Antibiotics will be prescribed to reduce the infection. As well other medications may be suggested, like nasal sprays, to increase the comfort of the sinusitis sufferer.

Sinusitis is a pretty common ailment that afflicts millions of individuals worldwide. The reason for sinusitis is that the paranasal sinuses within our skulls are irritated either by bacteria or allergies that cause the sinus passages to swell and constrict. When this happens, a sinus headache ensues. The areas affected by a sinus headache can be found where the swollen sinuses are which happen to be in the face or check areas, between the eyebrows, and behind the eyes.

Sinus headaches can be very sever and is always accompanied by stuffy nose and a persistent green or yellow colored nasal discharge. There are several very effective over the counter cures for sinus headaches and sinusitis. Unfortunately, these treatments have been known to fail among individuals who have mistakenly diagnosed themselves to have sinusitis and therefore suffer from sinus headaches.

Studies have been reported to produce results that show that among individuals who think they suffer from sinus headaches, up to 97% of them actually suffer from migraine instead. It was found that people and sometimes doctors mistake migraine for sinus headaches, resulting in false and useless treatments. Imagine suffering needlessly with these supposed headaches and not getting the much sought after relief from use of sinusitis medication. Naturally, if you suffer from migraine and not sinus headaches, you must get migraine specific medication.

Otherwise, you will continue to suffer from migraines without getting proper treatment and this of course can result to a serious impediment on the quality of life you deserve to enjoy.

It is quite easy to mistake migraines for sinus headaches because some individuals who suffer migraine also suffer from sinusitis like symptoms such as pain in the face area as well as a stuffy nose and ref puffy eyes. Although, people must keep in mind that if it is indeed a sinus headache induced by a sinus infection then along with the other symptoms, the person with sinusitis will have constant yellow or green nasal discharge. Without this, it is not a sinus headache from sinusitis. It could be migraine.

To help you and your doctor be able to correctly diagnose the root cause of your headache and determine whether it is indeed sinus headache or migraine, it has been said that it is helpful to keep a headache diary. Keeping tabs and taking notes every time one experiences a headache can help one accurately log the experience and details that may otherwise have been neglected will be highlighted and will help in proper diagnosis.

You feel terrible and your cold just won’t go away. Is it really a cold or has it turned into something more? Unfortunately, it can be difficult to tell the difference. Please be aware that you are not alone. Sinus infections affect millions of Americans every year. Depending on which of the four sinus cavities are affected the symptoms of a sinus infection may vary.

There are also different types of sinus infections, one being acute and the other being chronic. Interestingly, in 1999, the Mayo Clinic released its findings that fungus is likely the cause of nearly all cases of chronic sinusitis.

While acute sinusitis will normally last less than ten days and not longer than eight weeks, chronic sinusitis will normally last longer than eight weeks or occur more than four times per year with symptoms usually lasting longer than twenty days.

There are several different symptoms of an acute sinus infection, which may include nasal discharge, postnasal drip, facial pain, fever and possibly headaches.

Some common symptoms of a chronic sinus infection may include chronic soar throat, chronic nasal discharge, bad breath, prolonged facial pain, discomfort below the eyes or across the bridge of the nose, toothaches and even low-grade headaches.

It is quite easy to confuse a common cold with a sinus infection. One symptom that is common to both colds and sinus infections is a stuffy nose.

Thankfully, your health care professional is able to diagnose sinusitis using different methods which may include a physical examination, listening to your symptoms, taking X-rays, and quite possibly performing an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) or CT scan (computed tomography).

Many people have reported positive results when using a colloidal silver mineral supplement as a part of their treatment program for recurring sinus infections.

Sinus Headache – A Common Sign of Chronic Sinusitis

By definition, a sinus headache is a headache caused by pressure inside the sinus cavities of the head, most often in connection with an infection of the sinuses. Common symptoms of a sinus headache may include pain and tenderness in the sinus area, discharge from the nose, and swelling of the face.

Often times it can be misleading to use the term headache in this way as recent studies indicate that a 'sinus headache' is often misdiagnosed by the sufferer and may instead be a tension headache or a migraine headache. A headache may be a sign of a more serious condition such as high blood pressure, brain tumor, eye problems, nerve problems, dental problems, myalgia or allergies. To obtain a proper diagnosis, an evaluation by a trained professional is absolutely essential. Diagnosis usually requires examination, an x-ray study of the sinuses and if necessary, an MRI or CT scan.

A sinus headache may create pain behind the eyes and in the ears as well as a constant feeling of pounding in your face and head. A sinus headache is just one of several possible symptoms of sinusitis, more commonly referred to as a sinus infection.

Most patients with chronic sinus infections do have some degree of headache or facial pain, which needs to be addressed. It is important to try to differentiate if your headache is sinus in origin or due to another cause, since treatment for different types of headaches varies greatly. Trying to cope with a chronic sinus headache can be extremely frustrating as it can make concentration and performance of even simple tasks extremely difficult.

As with many health conditions, the best way to deal with sinus headache is to treat its source. A sinus headache is often the result of a bacterial or fungal infection in the sinus cavities. The sinuses are connected to the nose and throat and are most often plugged by infection and congestion in the nose. Therefore, eliminating infection and maintaining the health of your nasal passages can significantly impact how often and how long you will have a sinus headache.

In 1999, The Mayo Clinic released its findings that fungus is likely the cause of nearly all cases of chronic sinusitis. Physicians will often prescribe antibiotics in the treatment of a sinus infection. While antibiotics do not work against fungus, colloidal silver has been shown to kill both fungus and bacteria. Many people have reported positive results when using a colloidal silver mineral supplement as a part of their treatment program for Fungal Sinusitis.

You should consult a licensed physician if you believe you have a serious health issue. You should also do a comprehensive research about colloidal silver, antibiotics and any other type of treatment before accepting anyone’s opinion about how to care for your health.

    Sinusitis: General Information About Treatment

Sinus infections are generally cured by medicational means as well as by applying warmed up compresses on your face at home. The expected goals of the treatment are:

    1. To relieve the pain and the pressure the patient feels
    2. Reduce sinus inflammation and ease mucus drainage
    3. Eliminate the infection
    4. Avoid symptoms from becoming persistent and protect the membranes of nose and sinuses

Medication treatment in sinusitis is especially prescribed in case of sinus infections with bacteria. The cure can last for several days or get to a few weeks depending on severity of the symptoms. Best results were achieved after using a combination of more medications.

Antibiotics are given to combat the bacterial infection; an antibiotic with good results has proven to be Amoxicillin. Stopping the pains is mostly achieved with analgesics like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. The inflammation of the sinus and nose membranes is reduced by administrating nasal decongestants such as pseudo ephedrine hydrochloride. Thickened mucus will also cause a series of problems; making it thinner is done through mucolytics. Corticosteroids in form of nasal sprays, containing prednisone, are most indicated for reducing inflammation in the nasal passages.

According to the latest studies, best results in medication have been touched by administering local inhaled antibiotics.

The cases of sinus infection lasting less than 3 weeks are diagnosed as acute sinusitis and usually are easy to treat. Because of side-effects like becoming resistant, stomach aches or diarrhea, antibiotics must be prescribed only is case of absolute certainty that the infection can be treated with antibiotics. Many cases of sinus disease are caused by germs and viruses that don’t respond to antibiotherapy.

If you recognize sinusitis symptoms, stem inhalation from the early stages might help you cure it faster and without antibiotics. Though, sinusitis caused by bacteria should be treated by a cure of 5-10 days with antibiotics; suspending the administration of drugs before term can make germs resistant to treatment and worsen the infection. If symptoms persist or modify during treatment the doctor could prescribe you a higher dose or a different kind of antibiotic. Some 5-10% of sinusitis episodes do not respond to ant biotical cure.

Chronic sinusitis requires a longer period of antibiotherapy combined with a nasal corticosteroid decongestant.

Sinus infections in people with a weaken immune system can be caused by atypical bacteria, viruses or fungus. These are rebel cases as they do not respond to current therapy and fungal or corticosteroid medication or even surgery can be necessary. Surgery is sometimes the last resort, when symptoms become permanent and unbearable and no treatment is efficient.

Diagnosing and treating sinusitis might take longer, as symptoms are assembling to those of a regular cold and the certainty of sinus infection especially in children may be difficult. If you suspect sinusitis in you or your child start home treatment immediately and see a specialist.
