The sinus headache is unique in it's location. It primarily affects the face, but can also affect the entire top of the head if the sinus infection is left untreated too long. You can actually make the sinus headache hurt worse by pushing on your sinus cavities such as your cheekbones and forehead. I wouldn't recommend doing it though as the pain spikes severely and does not go back down for hours!

The sinus headache is caused by a sinus infection or sinusitis. Since there are several sinus cavities and locations, pain from a sinus headache may be in all or just a few locations. Pain from the sinus cavities is felt in the cheek area, above and behind the eyes and top of the head. Getting on an antibiotic can give relief the next day.

I've read that sinus infections rarely cause sinus headaches, and I can't help but wonder if that author had ever experienced a sinus infection? I had chronic sinus infections for over twenty years until I had sinus surgery a few years ago and an overly large turbinate was removed. I have not had a sinus infection, or very painful sinus headache for three years now. I can tell you though that from my experience with twenty years of sinus infections, every single one of them produced a sinus headache.

The pain from a sinus headache was slightly less painful, or as painful as a migraine headache. Bending over made the sinus headache so painful that I almost passed out.

While waiting for your antibiotic to kick in and stop the pain, there are some things you can do to give relief from the sinus headache. Lie back and put a warm washcloth on your forehead, eyes and cheeks several times a day. Take aspirin, acetaminophen or ibuprofen also after making sure there will be no drug interaction with your sinus infection prescription. Use a hot steam vaporizer in your bedroom or lie down in the bathroom with the shower running on hot water. You can lie back in the tub with the shower running but I wouldn't recommend it as the pressure from the water hitting your face would cause the pain to be much worse.

It is important to drink lots of liquids to help flush out the sinuses. Use a saline nasal spray a few times a day to try and open up the sinuses to help them drain faster. You may be quite nauseous from the sinus infection but do try to eat some soup and applesauce. You don’t want to add a hunger headache on top of the sinus headache. Also sleep as much as you can. Sleep helps the body heal, and you can't feel pain when you're asleep!

    Sinus Drops for Bad Breath

The use of sinus drops for bad breath is a novel approach to an old problem. The theory behind this idea is that sinus problems, and the resulting constant drainage of mucus down the back of the throat, is a contributing factor to halitosis. Sinus drainage, often called post nasal drip, is rich in proteins - proteins found in inflammatory cells, sloughed off mucosal cells from the lining of the sinuses, blood cells, antibodies, and other things. And proteins are what bacteria in the back of the mouth need for nutrients: a group of bacteria that live on the back of the tongue, and other secluded oral locations, break down protein for food, and produce bad smelling sulfur compounds that cause bad breath.

When bad breath is associated with post nasal drip, tonsiloliths (tonsil stones) are often a problem as well. These are hard little accumulations of decaying material from the sinus drainage that lodge in the tonsils. They quickly become colonized by the bacteria from the back of the tongue - the same bacteria responsible for bad breath, and can be the source of a nasty odor. Treatment with sinus drops for bad breath, often in combination with other oral care products, is aimed at decreasing the numbers of bacteria and preventing the formation of tonsiloliths.

The very back of the mouth is the site of most of the problem. In that relatively small area, we have tonsils and adenoids, mucus draining from the sinuses, and many odor producing bacteria living primarily on the back part of the tongue. Conditions are perfect for the proliferation of the bacteria and a buildup of waste materials in the form of tonsil stones. Oral preparations for treating bad breath may not adequately contact all the tissues in question - contact with the tonsils and the higher areas where the sinuses are draining is limited with these products. Sinus drops for bad breath, however, take the same route to the back of the throat that the drainage takes; thus, it provides for maximum contact with the affected areas and the troublesome bacteria.

It's recommended that sinus drops for bad breath be used in combination with other bad breath products. If you have tonsiloliths, this is even more strongly advised. A daily program of good oral hygiene with an appropriate toothpaste, mouthwash, regular tongue cleaning, and, of course, sinus drops, is often very effective.

Infection of the Sinus - A Symptom: Toothache

Can an infection of the sinus be signaled by a toothache? The short answer to this question is yes. I personally had an experience with this phenomenon several years ago and was completely fooled by what was happening. Hopefully others might find clarification if they have a similar experience.

Several years ago on a trip to France, I started having minor toothaches in the upper right portion of my mouth. I took Tylenol at first, and that dulled the pain for a while. The toothaches gradually became more severe, and even though I doubled the dosage of painkiller, it got so bad that I could not sleep at night.

I finally asked our hotel to contact a local French dentist and schedule an appointment with him. The dentist took X-rays and examined my teeth, and he tried to identify which tooth was the culprit in order to diagnose the problem. He tapped on several of my teeth, and each time asked if the pain became worse. As much as I wanted to cooperate and pinpoint the source of the pain, I could not help him identify the exact tooth that was the source of my discomfort. The X-rays did not signal any problem either, so the dentist told me he could not do anything more with my teeth. He prescribed large ibuprofen tablets for pain. I called them “horse pills”, and he told me to take those until I returned home and could see my normal dentist. Unfortunately the “horse pills” made me violently sick to my stomach, and I’m not sure which was worse, the disease or the cure. It should also be pointed out as a matter of side interest that I had to pay in cash for the visit, and the price was 20 euros, or about $25 U.S. at the time, which included the X-rays. That amount was less than the co-payment required by my medical insurance coverage at home in the U.S.

The tooth pain did eventually subside, however, as did the upset stomach, and by the time I saw my dentist at home in the U.S., I was feeling well. He made an examination of my teeth, and also took more X-rays. He showed these to me, and I was quite surprised to see that the roots of several of my upper teeth were clearly visible inside my sinus cavity, which he pointed out was rather large. He eventually concluded that the problem had been an infection of the sinus, and not a tooth problem.

I’ve had many sinus infections over the years and have suffered through two painful sinus operations. This was the only time that an infection of the sinus affected me in this way. I did not have the normal deep headaches, runny nose and eyes, and nasal congestion, as was always the case in the past. This time, and this time only, the only symptom was the toothache. So it is apparent that an infection of the sinus can manifest itself in several ways, and sinus sufferers should be aware of this.

How To Deal With A Sinus Headache

Everyone experiences headaches every now and then and they can be brought on by many different reasons. A Sinus headache is one of the many kinds of headaches which is often associated with sinusitis or an inflamed sinus. An inflamed sinus blocked the nasal passage which triggers the pain in your head.

All of us have sinuses. It is located in the center of the face which is differentiated into maxillary, ethmoid, frontal and sphenoid. These four sinuses are located in the center of our faces. This is the reason why people experience headache if they have sinusitis because basically it is located in the face.

The headache will be getting worse if you will be continuously exposed to irritants such as perfumes, allergen and smoking. So how does sinus headache happen?

Once your sinus is inflamed, your breathing is not the only one being affected but the normal draining passage is being blocked as well. The trapped drainage is creating a pressure which in turn causes the headache.

The sinus headache is frequently mistaken from migraine. According to some studies, 90% of those who were diagnosed with sinus headache have migraines in the first place. A sinus headache may exacerbate if pressure is applied on the nasal or the sinuses.

To begin with, the cause of headache is quite difficult to identify since there are numerous causative agents. What are the symptoms of sinusitis except from headache? It is important for us to know these things in order for us to clearly identify the type of headache we’re experiencing.

An individual who is experiencing sinusitis is complaining of pressure around the eyes area which radiates to the cheeks and forehead. He or she is also experiencing nasal stuffiness, swelling of the face and fever with chills. A nasal discharge of color yellow or green may also be present.

Remember that these symptoms are also similar with other diseases such as those who have an upper respiratory tract infection. The best way to diagnose sinusitis is to perform an endoscopy wherein the doctor will look inside your nose using the endoscope device.

Sinusitis is often caused by bacteria such as the streptococcus aureus, haemophilus influenzae and the moraxella catarrhalis. It is important for sinusitis to be treated as soon as possible to prevent further infection. The treatment of choice for this is the antibiotics.

For those having difficulty in breathing, a decongestant or vaporizers can be used to thin the mucus and aid in breathing. Just put in my mind that not all people who have sinusitis can use the decongestant. Those people who have a problem with their hearts are contraindicated to use it.

The reason behind it is because it has an adrenaline power which will increase your pulse rate and blood pressure which in turn will put you in great risk. If the decongestant is still not effective, a steroidal nasal spray may be used. Steroids are known for their anti-inflammatory action.

If you are experiencing sinus headaches, these are some simple home remedies to relieve yourself from the pain.

    1. Dip your towel in cold water and apply it on your forehead. Dip it again if the towel gets warm. This is to relieve the pain in your head.

    2. Take a rest. Rest helps restore the body’s functioning which will make you feel better and relieved of headache.

    3. Eating spicy foods such as jalapeno will help you drain the trapped mucus on your sinuses. This is the reason why we always have a nasal discharge whenever we’re eating foods rich in spice.

    4. You can also use Chinese herbals like the Magnolia Flower. This aid in widening the sinus passage will helps in draining the mucous.

The therapy of sinusitis depends on the severity of the case. This is why it is important to consult your physician as soon as possible once you’re experiencing these symptoms. The treatment may require from several weeks to several months. Doctors may also offer you medications for the relief of symptoms and if the case is cannot be treated with oral medications anymore; the patient may require undergoing surgical procedures to drain the trapped abscess.

Problems with sinuses, give rise to headaches, so you have to know the symptoms of a sinus headache in order to know if you actually have one. The sinuses are small spaces in the facial bones just below the facial skin. The spaces are concentrated in the nasal region, temples and around the eyes. Sometimes, due to infection, these spaces get inflamed with mucus and infected as well. Below are some of the symptoms of a sinus headache:

A gentle shake of your head can tell you if you do have a infection of the sinuses(sinusitis). If you move your head even slightly, the pain will increase and this is a good method of deciding whether the headache is actually due to an infection of your sinuses, this is one of the major symptoms of a sinus headache, and if you find you do have an infection, do not shake your head as this will give rise to even more shooting pain headaches.

Another method is to try bending over. The moment you lower your head you will feel as if there is something heavy inside your head. If doing so leads you to discover you have a infection of the sinuses, refrain from bending over until the infection clears.

There are many causes for sinusitis which are allergy, a deviated nasal septum, and severe cold, enlarged parts inside of the nose, and acute ongoing infection, and sometimes menstral.
